In October this year I will be participating in something called The Freedom Challenge! I just signed up today and could not be more excited to see what our mighty God is going to do with this!
What is The Freedom Challenge? There are many different kinds that have been completed, most of which involved scaling a mountain range somewhere in the world.
This year, the organization Operation Mobilization (OM) is running two freedom challenges. I am participating in the Grand Canyon Challenge 2018. This means a team of us will be walking through the Grand Canyon from one rim to the other, over a course of five days.
Does this sound a little nuts? That’s okay! It is!
So why? What is the reason to complete this arduous trek?
To fight the human trafficking that is happening all over the world today! Specifically, to fight and help end sexual trafficking.
“The Freedom Challenge is a movement of passionate women dedicated to freeing oppressed and enslaved women and children all around the world. We do this by participating in physical challenges that test our limits, while raising funds and awareness to combat these social injustices and set women and children on the pathway to freedom.”
God has placed this cause on my heart quite a few years ago now, and at the time I knew that I needed to be involved in a bigger way. Back then, I didn’t know what that looked like or meant.
Over the years, I have been praying for people who are on the front lines. The ones going out into the streets and hotels, rescuing and restoring these precious people caught up in these tragic situations. I have also given money to certain organizations committed to ending this terrible slavery, but I feel like it is time to step it up a notch.
Last month, I checked out a website simply to read a blog post. But the moment I started reading and found out it was about The Freedom Challenge, I knew that I had to answer the call myself.
Even though this is my time to do the challenge, and I will be the one raising awareness and funds, as well as doing the hike, this is so much bigger than me. This is about the 30 million people right now, trapped in a life that they would never have chosen.
Before, I may have been whispering, “Set the captives free”, every now and then. I whisper no more!
It is time to set the captives free! It is time to look our brothers and sisters in the face, see their pain, help bear it, and bring them out of the pit, because we have been brought out of the pit!
Can little ol’ Sylvia do this by herself? Not a chance.
However, we serve One incredible God that sees His beautiful creation waiting for a light of hope. I believe that God has asked me to simply carry my torch and shine the light that He has given me.
Nothing more and nothing less.
I also believe there is NOTHING that God cannot do when we give Him our “Yes”!
Well, Lord, you asked. “Sylvia, will you trust me? Will you take my hand and walk this road with me to share the good news that sets captives free?”
“Yes, Lord!” I say, “Yes!”
Will this road be easy? No way. I know there will be many times where all I have left is the breath to pray. There will also be times of physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion, but still I will press on.
I can press on because I have the Saviour of the World, the King of kings to walk every step with me, just as I know He walks each step with those enslaved.
On top of training for this challenge over the course of three months, I also have to raise $5,000 USD which all goes to help women and children caught in those dark places.
If you would like to bring your “yes” and donate to this cause and my walk in the Grand Canyon from one rim to the other, please click here to donate online.
I will also host a few fundraisers before the due date of June 1, 2018. If you have any questions about this, please ask!
As it says in Proverbs 31:8, “Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute.”
