Just as children grow up and learns to do things on their own, so we as believers can easily get to a place in our faith where we barely pray anymore. Our lives go on, we get busy, and we forget that our Heavenly Father wants to hear from us daily.
So what happens? We pray when something bad occurs. Our car breaks down or our kid gets hurt at school, and at this moment we feel the need to reach out.
“God, help me! Why is this happening? Can you lend a hand?”
I call this reactive prayer. Life goes along and we are simply living until something hard, sad, or devastating happens. That’s when we remember that there is a God and that He can move mountains. At that moment we remember to pray and ask others to pray.
Is this wrong? No. God is always listening and He always cares.
But there is more, so much more to our walk with God! We never outgrow God.
As humans, we are creatures of habit, it’s just a fact. So even if we are out of the habit of praying, we can work towards making it a constant reaction to everything that goes on in our lives.
We can become a people who pray proactively. So what does proactive prayer look like?
- You pray when life is good
- You pray when life is hard
- You pray when you wake up in the morning and ask God to bless the day
- You pray about the big things (Like where you should work)
- You pray about the small things (Like where you left the keys)
- You pray for mountains to move
- You pray and believe for miracles
- You pray for others as well as yourself
These are just a few examples of how we can pray proactively, which means constantly and on the offensive. Think about sports for a moment. How do the best teams play the game? Do they only focus on the defence and not getting scored on? If they do, there is no way they can win because you can’t win unless you score! We know this in sports, but often forget it is the same way in life. If we only pray when something bad happens, life can start to suck. But if we pray about anything and everything, we are like the team that plays both the defence and offence. We go for the goal and we play to win!
A life of praying all the time is simply talking to the One who loves us and created us! Not only are we allowed to talk to God and ask Him for things, but this is what He wants! This thing called relationship is what we were created for. We are His children, which means we have direct access to the Father’s heart, ear, and inheritance!
“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” – Hebrews 4:16
When God sent His Son to the earth, it wasn’t a small task. He humbled Himself enough to come as a baby, grow up with human parents, share heartache as we humans do, face rejection, and then to top it all off, be led away to be crucified. God was and still is ALL IN! And He is inviting us to go all in too! This is the abundant and full life He was talking about when Jesus said, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” (John 10:10)
When we pray with purpose and proactively, before anything out of the ordinary happens, then it will be our immediate first response when something does happen, good or bad! The more we pray, the closer we get to God, and the bolder we become in asking!
“Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer, believe that you have received it, and it will be yours.” – Mark 11:24
I encourage you to take a moment right now and ask God for something that you think is impossible. Go ahead and ask because He cares about you and what is on your heart, always. He is just waiting for you to ask.
Let’s become a people after God’s own heart who pray proactively!
